FOUND: Snowflakes

I was going through my daily ritual of reading LAist.com and found a post about snowflakes...

It put a snowflake in my eye. (mostly because my desk is under the AC)

Anyway, I was struck by one man's vision of bringing the simplicity of what nature provides us under a microscope... the snowflakes like the human race... no two are alike. And for that, I am grateful.

Isn't it mesmerizing? My snowboard begs to come out of hibernation, I am ready to indulge him.

"Here in sunny Southern California we don't get to take an up-close look at snowflakes very often--if at all--and hardly anyone in the world gets to look at them the way Caltech physics professor Ken Libbrecht has.

Libbrecht's photographs of snowflakes have just been awarded the 2010 Lennart Nilsson Award, which is an annual prize given for scientific and medical photography, reports the Pasadena Star-News. Libbrecht will be presented with the prize in Stockholm next week.

Here's a look at just a few of the amazing snowflake images for which Libbrecht won his award."- laist

FOUND: FOUR LOKO

Brooks- This LOKO is for you - CLICK HERE

Hopefully the link above will curtail some of your consumption.

FOUND: TOUR DE FAT

Katie and I ventured with Mommykins to the Tour De Fat. We took the metro down to Union station and biked to "Not A Corn Field" where there were hoards of decorated bikes and costumed cyclists... my mom was disappointed she didn't wear her dirndl to the ride.

Although the ride was fun in concept, we ended up wanting a faster ride... no one acted as corks... and no corkage = lots of stops.

So off the route we went to hit ArtisanalLA.

Photos and stories to follow.

FOUND: Working Hard for the Money

FOUND: BBQ in the Heart of Hollywood

My friend Joe and I found BBQ right in the heart of the city.

Hollywood, an odd place to discover a dive BBQ restaurant that serves a mean pulled pork sandwich and scrumptious mac and cheese.

I can't share with you where it is.. for fear you will either judge or eat all of the limited amounts of mac and cheese available.

'Tis Limited. I know. I got the last batch of it and had to share with Joe.

It's a good thing for him that I like sharing.

FOUND: Molly's Charbroiled Burger House

Another iconic business disappearing before our eyes. With Hollywood going all Hollywood on it's ass, and getting too valuable for it's own real estate.... The smaller venues that have been sitting comfortably in the shadows are starting to shutter.

Molly's Charbroiled Burger House has been around since my earliest childhood memories. It is a funkly little burger joint lined with stools, but no real dining seating. A welcoming front for the Hollywood straggler wandering by alone and hungry for a quick griddley fried meal.

Just the other night I decided that it was my time to show my support, I walked to the counter and the owner gruffly informed me, "It's closed! "

The restaurant is technically still open... I just arrived too late to order food.

NEXT TIME... there will be a next time! I made a promise to myself as a child that, I too, will sit at that stool on Vine and eat a Charbroiled Burger.

FOUND: The Park (on Sunset)

Went to THE PARK on Sunset for Abigail and Emily's Birthday.

BEST

JIDORI
CHICKEN
OF
MY
LIFE

Chicken jus soaked up by french fries.

And I was done.

Come on, you can't beat a $20 3 -course set menu with an $8 corkage. Especially if means you are eating the juiciest and most flavorful chicken of your life!

FOUND: CLEO

I promised myself I wouldn't go.

But I did.

And I liked it.

It is kinda too good to be true. I think I already posted about this restaurant, but don't judge, I am just hungry and wanted to look at the photos again.

FOUND: Phantom Hairdresser

After the Gorbals performance... I wandered out of the Alexandria Hotel to stumble upon a very peculiar scenario. Not one you come upon often.

I found a woman who has agreed to have her hair cut on the street, no it wasn't me, though I did considered it. It was only $20. Quite frankly the guy did a phenomenal job on the gal who was draped in his black hairdresser cape.

She seemed a bit anxious that she had agreed to such an endeavor (note: ciggy butt in hand), but ultimately when the cape was whisked off her by the mysterious man... we were all there standing in envy.

What an experience!

Honestly, I am thinking I might just get into urban street hairdressing... just in case this "producing stuff" doesn't work out in the end.

I will have to consult with this hairdressing wonder, we will have to map out territories... he may have downtown, but I claim Hollywood! I smell a new reality show in the workings! Just need a snappy show name.

FOUND: Antoine Dodson

My first Antoine Dodson Costume Spotted Last weekend at a Dodgeball House Party.

I know we are all going to see our fair share of Antoines, but this one was pretty damn convincing... even if she was a woman.

Mom, I know you are out of the pop-culture loop- I am referencing this dude- Click Here.

FOUND: Succulents =suckfree

Ok, so by now you are well aware of my obsession with succulents. It's pretty obvious, like my obsession with multicolored scarves.

I saw this arrangement at ArtisanalLA in one of the eating areas.

Hope it stops your day from sucking...

It helped mine.

FOUND: Portaoke

Yes, This did happen.

Brilliant?
Yes... now just have to wait your turn. I promise I will be fast!

You are welcome to come in and take a listen.

*Mental Note: Need to order one of these at my next party!

FOUND: The Gorbals

WILL WRIGHT READS...
- local writers reading their latest works -

THE GORBALS
501 South Spring Street
Los Angeles, CA 90013

http://thegorbalsla.com/

Last night I went to THE GORBALS to support my friend, Will Wright, and his night of Readers.

Will typically holds his event "Will Wright Reads" at the Echo Park Film Center, but this time he mixed it up and held it at The Gorbals.

He placed a mic front and center.

The dining room was filled to the gills with Will's friends, the readers, and the reader's friends....

So, there I was...

seated at the bar, per usual.

What I love most about their bar is how it is placed right next to "the pass" (where plated dishes are waiting to be delivered to hungry patrons). The effect: you have a front row seat to the open kitchen... best way to see what to order.

When the evening came upon a dull Reader (sorry, there were), I was happily distracted by the sharpening of knives on display in front of me. Think- Benihana style! nothing gets my heart racing like a good ole-fashion knife sharpening.

Altogether, it was a bubbly and engaging crowd and I always depart wondering how it is that there are all of these creative minds hiding in the city, and thank Will for bringing them out of their shells and sharing their creative pearls with us.

Will, I would like to extend my gratitude to you for creating a night for word artists and their admirers.

We all know you could easily profit off of this night by charging and alas, you spend your limited free time to create a penny-free event for free thinkers.

I would like to round out this post with a general observation: Gorbals is a fun word to say. Don't you agree?

FOUND: Are you a Peggy or Joan?

This halloween I am really stuck with what I should do for my costume, until I saw this t-shirt:

I THINK I AM A JOAN!

Mostly given my womanly figure and all. I am now thinking it shouldn't be too hard of a costume to pull off. My friend Abigail has offered to help me complete the look, with pen on a necklace.

(FYI- I love that when you buy the shirt I posted above, it goes to a good cause!! **)

FOUND: LA Metro

1 Metro + 3 Bikes + 3 Bennett Ladies = 1 dia de adventuras

The three of us decided we would spend the day car-free.

We had two events to attend downtown, ArtisanalLA & Tour De Fat, and a afternoon without a car was just the freedom we desired. The pace we went was the pace set by our own legs.

If you haven't yet had the pleasure of experiencing Bike-metro'ing , you are missing out like if you haven't had jelly with peanut butter. Let me tell you, with our clean, fast, and reliable metro system, it is best paired with a bike.

If you need any tips or are a little nervous to do this experience by yourself, just let me know, I will be there to hold your handlebars for you.

FOUND: House Zoo/ Party

Nothing better than a house party that is filled with people passing around an orange picnic chair backpack, walls filled with stuffed animals, Mao the Mouse, and wait.... Did I mention.... I am pregnant?

FOUND: Umami with my production-mates

Went with my fellow production Libras to Umami in the Wood of Holly.

A fine restaurant if you ask me- $4 Tigers , a plate of pickles, a round of cheesey tots, sweet potato fries, and order yourself a round of burgers you can go splitskies.

A Duck-faced Peace to you too!

I have to say, every "reality-working" gal needs a production posse who knows how to eat, drink, and rip and tear....

As the show we worked together on taught us so boldly to declare: ENOUGH ALREADY!

We will miss you Hedo-Linds... NYC is one lucky city....
